Intensive game management began on Lambshead in 1944. Thoughout this timeframe, an impressive whitetail deer herd, pure-strain Rio Grande turkey, hogs, quail and duck popultations testify to the success of our ongoing wildlife program. According to biologist surveys, deer with Boone & Crockett scores over 170 are not uncommon on the Ranch; several which have been harvested scoring over 200. Lambshead has achieved statewide recognition for our committment to game management and received the Region V (57 Counties) wildlife conservation award in 2001.
Hogs and coyotes are also plentiful throughout the ranch. Hogs that inhabit the river bottoms are decendants of those furnished by the government to the Indians on the Comanche Reservation in the 1870's. In addition to dear, Lambshead Ranch is now offering guided turkey, hog, quail, dove, and varmint hunting on a limited basis. This is a rare opportunity to experience an historic Texas ranch and enjoy some of the best hunting the state has to offer.
Hunters that visit Lambshead will begin their stories in the cookshack, where the fireplace begins to roar, coffee begins to brew and breakfast starts to sizzle around 5am. In the evening, prime beef on an open grill, wild game specialties, fresh vegetables and salads and bread pudding cooked in a cast iron oven are a special part of the hunting experience not to be missed.
